Baltimore's Most Musical Weekend: ArtScape & RatScape

Break out your finest pair of jorts Baltimore because this weekend marks the start of Artscape – America's largest free outdoor arts festival. With too much to see, and too much to drink this weekend I thought I would distil down a few of the weekend's musical happenings here.

But wait there's more!

This year is the debut of a uniquely Baltimore event called RatScape as well. Running parallel to Artscape's timeline at Hour Haus Studios RatScape will feature a nonstop concert barrage featuring 47 bands over three days.

Chris Pumphrey Sextet Concert Review

The Wind Up Space is one of Baltimore's sometimes hidden treasures. It's a unique performance/gallery space and bar that hosts musicians who mostly don't fit between the Meyerhoff and the Ottobar. It's nestled in neatly on the corner of North Avenue and Charles Street one block from where Omar shot Brother Mouzone.

This last Friday night The Wind Up Space was invaded by the likes of Level Zero, Mobley, and the unparalleled Chris Pumphrey Sextet. I loved this. The crowd was a mix of reverent silence and overheated boozers who where looking to blow off steam with some out jazz. Both crowds were satiated.

The Chris Pumphrey Sextet, Level Zero, & Mobley

Hey Baltimore, let's keep those good feelings we started yesterday with all that fourth of July fun rolling right into the weekend. Tomorrow, July sixth, The Wind Up Space is hosting a trio of bands including the Chris Pumphrey Sextet, Level Zero, and Mobley. The Chris Pumphrey Sextet is a ruckus good time and always bring a punishing amount of creativity and energy to the stage. They are a distinct jazz ensemble and should not be missed. The concert information can also be found on Facebook.

Doors open at 8:00 and the bands begin an hour later with a seven dollar cover for the event. Support local music. We in Baltimore are fortunate to have such diverse, talented, and forward thinking musicians to see on any given night. So come out and be a part of the scene. See you there – you dig?
