Inspired by the John Cusack classic High Fidelity, Chris and Andy create a new Top 5 list based on pre-determined topics. Lists are shared with the public through their Facebook fan page Chris and Andy’s Top 5 Salon, where anyone can then create their own lists. Their mission: To entertain and research popular culture through Top 5 lists.
Jimmy Fallon just got a big ol’ promotion. I’ve always been a fan of his. He takes his music just seriously enough to make it really good, but not quite so seriously that he can’t have a ton of fun with it. In honor of his new position (and hopefully not the death of his ability to do fun things like this) I bring you my top five favorite Jimmy Fallon music videos.
Hello, if you are reading this you may have noticed there has been a little face-lift around here. We’ll spare you the boring points but basically the site is now faster, more mobile friendly, easier to navigate, and generally more awesome. To honor this new epicenter of the Dig world I thought I’d dig up my all-time top five favorite posts from Dig past. So, without further adieu…
A few weeks ago I went to the latest showing of the Music Driven series at Nitehawk Cinema on American Hardcore. Here are some thoughts on the film and genre.
Last month, I went to Nitehawk Cinema for the latest in their Music Driven series, done in partnership with Noisey. They showed Todd Haynes' film Velvet Goldmine. It is loosely based on David Bowie and it was very interesting. Musician Nathan Larson of Shudder to Think was there for a Q&A – he helped create original music – and from him, I learned some new things. Here is what I dug about the film, plus a few things I dig about Bowie.
A little while ago, I saw the film Gimme The Loot, the debut feature from director Adam Leon. It’s an impressive first work. You may recognize the title as a Notorious B.I.G. song, which was a conscious choice by Adam. This got me thinking about what other hip-hop songs could be good movie titles. Here are ten other songs with films I made up that I would go see.
Nitehawk Cinema and Noisey have teamed up for a cool monthly film series called “Music Driven,” which screens movies about music. The very first installment took place last Sunday with a showing of the film A Skin Too Few, a documentary about Nick Drake. Besides the interesting film, there was a Q&A with Nick’s producer Joe Boyd and a performance by musician Jesse Harris. I like Nick Drake but have never totally plunged into his catalog or read much about him, so it was an enlightening experience. Here are five things I learned.
It's true. Believe it or not, David Bowie rocked a moustache in 1967 on his self-titled debut album. The album (released the same day as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) was a flop. It mixed pop, psychedelia, and marching band in an unsettling quaint kind of way that audiences just weren't ready for. Bowie fans now will love it, because let's face it – Bowie is awesome. My favorite review of the album is from David Buckley who described it as "…the vinyl equivalent of the madwoman in the attic." Well said. The featured video is RubberBand, the third single released from this ridiculous album.
"In 1910 I was so handsome and so strong. My moustache was stiffly waxed and one foot long." -Bowie
All Time Top 5 is an extension of our feature for the Paper Crane Collective where we compile music lists on various subjects. Here on our main site, we outsource the work, and allow some of our favorite artists to create lists and commentary based on a topic we provide. Once we add in the music it magically becomes an artist-curated mixtape list. What more could you want?
We're very happy to kick off the All Time Top 5 feature with Brian Sendrowitz of the great band Beat Radio. Being a man of words and a lover of all things Kerouac, I knew Brian would be able to make a solid list of songs to listen to while reading Kerouac. He was all over it.
It's time again for another edition of All Time Top 5, Those Who Dig's bi-weekly column for the Paper Crane Collective. This week is my (Steve) first submission and I chose to rank my favorite songs to play on the jukebox. You should check it and all the other great PCC posts out!
